About our Acadiana Local Hero!

Why this finalist was deserving of Acadian's Local Hero.
In 2005 Jason Bland was in a horrific auto accident which landed him in a coma for 6 days. In the accident his right leg was severely injured. After a year due to pain and infection the decision was made to amputate his leg. Depression as well as alcohol and substance abuse ensued until Jason had an epiphany and decided to turn his life around. He received treatment for his addictions and developed a relationship with a church. In February of 2007 he started an organization entitled Acadiana Amputee Support Group in order to reach out and be of assistance to people who had also suffered the loss of a limb. Jason's love for God and his desire to help people with disabilities led him in 2010 to establish and lead a non profit organization called Trinity Outdoor Disabled Adventures. Their mission is to provide God led and God inspired outdoor adventures for the disabled and their families. In their first 2 years of existence, they served hundreds of individuals on hunting, fishing, and camping trips. Community support and successful fundraising events has enabled TODA to purchase special equipment that can assist even severely disabled people to hunt and fish! Some of his participants have been mentally traumatized from their disabilities and one man in particular had not left his home in seven years. Jason was successful in convincing this man to go on a rabbit hunt. TODA has established a large network of volunteers and many are family members of a disabled person.

How Jason's efforts have made a difference in the community for the better.
Many of Jason's adventure participants and their families have been encouraged to not give up on life. They have met other families with similar problems and have been able to form support groups and a sense of sharing both joys and grief as they learn that life goes on and we are to make the best of it for all parties involved!

How becoming Acadiana's Local Hero will further Jason's cause.
People may be inspired to make contributions in time or money to his non profit organization. Some may have a disabled family member or friend who could be encouraged by participating in one of his activities
