About our Acadiana Local Hero!

Why this finalist was deserving of Acadian's Local Hero.
Heartstrings and Angel Wings was inspired by the birth of Heath Logan, a Breaux Bridge native to our founding members, born 15 weeks too soon. At birth, Heath weighed 1 pound 7 ounces and remained in the NICU for over 3 months. during his extended stay in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, Heath was eventually healthy enough to be bathed and dressed in clothing. At around two pounds or less in weight, where do you find clothing for a baby so small?(Preemie clothing at retail stores fits babies that are 5 to 7 pounds.) With nowhere to turn to clothe their baby, Heath's family searched the internet and found some clothing for Heath at a cost of about $100 for 3 or 4 outfits. A very hard price to pay for a family in stress. After another premature baby was born in the same family, the thought of starting a group which would give babies in the NICU clothing so that the family can be relieved of this simple stress began. Heartstrings & Angel Wings was formed in 2008, by Rachel Patin, and is proud to have donated to hunger of babies in the Neonatal Intensive Care Units all over the state of Louisiana. Our service provides comfort for families because the can view their loved one in everyday clothing, making things seem at a little more "normal." The premature babies we provide clothing for range from 1 pound or less to 5 pounds in weight and most stay for weeks or months in Intensive Care. The items we provide are NICU-friendly shirts, wraps. and gowns, receiving blankets, crocheted hats, bereavement gowns, incubator covers, frogs & snakes(used for positioning the baby). NICU-friendly clothing allows openings for minimal disturbance to the baby and allows openings for leads and IVs helping in the prevention of infection. Regular donations are made to Louisiana hospitals: Lafayette General Women and Childrens Woman's Hospital Opelousas General Medical Center Terrebonne General Hospital Donations are often made by request of family members for babies in hospitals across Louisiana.

How Rachel's efforts have made a difference in the community for the better.
Rachel Patin, and the volunteers of Heartstrings & Angel Wings have made families that have preemie babies. That they have someone to help them at their time of need. I was inspired by Rachel Patin and her dedication to helping families in need. That is why I have crocheting hats for four years, and this warms my heart to help these families. Rachel inspires other people to see the good in helping these sweet babies and their families at their time of need.

How becoming Acadiana's Local Hero will further Rachel's cause.
By recognizing Rachel Patin as a Acadiana Hero. Would help Heartstrings and Angel Wings to receive donations for clothing our smallest miracles. It would help to inform more people about this non-profit organizations.
