About our Acadiana Local Hero!

Why this finalist was deserving of Acadian's Local Hero.
I would like to submit Audry Spencer as Acadiana's Local Hero. Audry is retired from the public school system in Acadia Parish after having taught elementary children for over 30 years. As a teacher, she noticed the failure of so many of the Crowley children to meet educational standards to move on the next grade. After praying about this, she decided to do something about it. She began the non-profit- Empowering the Community for Excellence. The mission of the program is to tutor underprivileged students who are at risk of failure. The targeted students are in grades 1-5, live in public housing and attend Acadia Parish schools. Audry purchased a home in West Crowley and then wrote a grant to bring that home up to standards. This tutoring center began accepting students in October 2013 and will continue to tutor during the school years. Students are tutored by certified teachers for 1 hour, twice a week. The center is open Monday through Thursday. The grant, written by Audry, was approved by the Department of Education to purchase materials, supplies, and salaries for many of the 12 teachers. Audry single handedly visited businesses, churches, banks, and non profit organizations collecting donations. Audry has placed her life on hold in order that this dream becomes a reality. She is out daily collecting the snacks the children receive, meeting with donors, gathering materials, and making sure the center runs smoothly. Between 4:00 pm and 6:)0 pm Monday through Thursday, she is at the center tutoring and overseeing the other teachers. Presently, teachers work with 15-25 students daily in the areas of reading and math. Audry has also mentored quite a few students during her 30 years of teaching. She has encouraged them to pursue their dreams, tutoring them and helping them out financially when needed. She believes in the children of Acadia Parish and has placed her retirement on hold to help those that are at risk for failure. Crowley is blessed to have such a dedicated and caring person that has the foresight to see what the needs in the area of education are in our community. This is why I have nominated Audry Spencer as Acadiana's Local Hero

How Audry's efforts have made a difference in the community for the better.
Audry is inspiring young children to do their best. These children will be motivated to study, finish school and seek vocational training or attend college. These underprivileged students are told twice a week for one hour they can learn. They are given the confidence that they will not fail. Through Audry Spencer's persistence, this tutoring program is impacting those students that need help the most. As she says- The students ability to learn is not the problem. They need great mentors and professionals that care about them. Audry has alrady made a difference.

How becoming Acadiana's Local Hero will further Audry's cause.
The maintenance on the tutoring center, utility bills, computers, and books are only a few of the expenses Audry has incurred since beginning the center. She would like to take the center on the road and be able to meet the students in their housing projects. A Mobile tutoring aspect (using a revamped motor home) is her dream. Being recognized will help her receive the much needed donations for the above items and give her the exposure she needs to make her dream continue for years to come.
